Miami Valley Husker's 1st Annual Celebrity Golf Outing for Charity - 2005 |
On September 10, 2005, we teamed up with former Husker and NFL players to host a golf scramble at the Beaver Creek Golf Club.
We had some wonderful celebrities at this outing, and their participation and help was greatly appreciated. Former Huskers – Brian Washington, Steve Taylor, Keith “End Zone” Jones, and Willie Amos along with former Bengals – Ickey Woods and James Brooks were on hand for this year’s event.
The golf outing was held to raise money for Discovery for Youth, a local orphanage/group home. Our very own Brian Washington is the Chief Executive Director of Discovery for Youth. |
Discovery for Youth has been providing foster care to children in the Dayton/Cincinnati area since 2002. Approximately 50 kids in the surrounding area use the facility’s services each year. Children range from ages 12 to 21, but Discovery for Youth will accept children as young as 8 years old.
The golf outing was a great opportunity for Husker fans to hang out with some of their favorite players. It was also a fun way to bring people together and to increase awareness of the needs of these children.
We had close to 50 golfers for this outing, and golfing talents ranged from first-time golfers to pro. We had great weather. The course was beautiful, and everyone had a great time.
Thanks to some hard working MVH members, the outing was very well organized. When the golfers showed up, there was a registration table at the club house to check people in, tell them which hole to start on, let them know where to pick up their lunch, and get them signed up for our silent auction. |
| After lunch, it was time to get the golfing underway. All of the carts were lined up in front of the clubhouse. Here’s Shawn Munn and Steve Taylor’s team. Some really good golfers on this team. | |||||||
Bruce Pletsch and Brian Washington’s team are just wondering how many times the drink cart will be coming around.
Depending on where you hit your ball, the course could be quite hilly. Here’s a picture of Don White hitting his ball up over the hill to the green. It’s up there somewhere. |
Not only was the course fun and challenging, we had some great contests at some of the holes. At two of them, we had hole-in-one prizes. One of the prizes was $25,000. Unfortunately, no one got a hole-in-one this year. Some people came close though. We also had a closest-to-the-pin contest and a furthest drive contest. Some of the other prizes you could win included $5000, a Bose Wave Radio, a set of Hogan Golf Clubs, and a Dell Computer.

This was a great day for all Husker fans. Not only did we get to have lunch and golf with Husker players, and have a chance to win some big money and prizes, but the party kept going and was carried over to the Fox and Hound, where we got to watch the Huskers beat Wake Forest 31-3. What a day!

During this event, we also had a silent auction where people could bid on authentic Husker and Bengal merchandise autographed by the players. Some of the items included full-size Husker and Bengal helmets, a Willie Amos game jersey (donated by Willie), an autographed picture of Steve Taylor handing the ball off to Keith Jones during a NU/OU game, two pairs of tickets to the NU/Texas Tech game, and autographed footballs. |
The silent auction is in full force at the Fox and Hound. |
A lot of items in the auction were in high demand. |
We had a great turnout at the Fox and Hound that night. About 70 fans were there to root on the Huskers. We even had our own reserved room at the Fox and Hound for our private party. |
| Here are some of the lucky winners in the silent auction. Jeff is holding an autographed football that a lot of people bid on, and Tara is sporting an autographed hat that was donated to the auction by Brian Washington. | |||||||
Shawn’s holding his new autographed Willie Amos game jersey and T.R. is showing off his new autographed official NCAA football |
Our first celebrity golf outing was a huge success! We raised $6,000 for Discovery for Youth. This money will go towards buying winter coats, bikes, Christmas presents, etc. for the kids. |
It was a fun-filled day for everyone! Everybody who helped organize this event deserves a big Thank You and a Job Well Done! We hope everyone joins us again for the next one! See you there! GO BIG RED!
