This is a good question and a common topic among Husker circles these days.  If we beat Colorado, our record will be 6-6, which will technically make us bowl eligible.  But will we be invited to a bowl game?  A lot of people say yes considering how we are playing at the end of the season and because our fans travel.  But, other factors have to work out for us to be assured of going to a bowl game.  For conversation purposes, let's take a look at the Big XII bowl partners and how the other teams in the Big XII are doing.  **Note:  I'm not a bowl expert so if I get something wrong, please let me know.**

 

The Big XII has nine separate bowl partners with eight bowl slots guarenteed, with a possibility of a 9th team going to a bowl game (this includes a possible BCS at-large bid)

 

1)  BCS (Fiesta Bowl - Big XII #1) - - BCS (Sugar Bowl - Big XII possible at-large bid)

2)  Cotton Bowl - Big XII #2

3)  Holiday Bowl - Big XII #3

4)  Gator Bowl - Big XII #4 (only when it picks a Big XII team)

4a)  Sun Bowl - Big XII #6 (only when the Gator Bowl does not choose a Big XII team)

5)  Alamo Bowl - Big XII #5

6)  Insight Bowl - Big XII #7

7)  Independence Bowl - Big XII #8

8)  Texas Bowl - Big XII #9

 

Now let's take a look at the Big XII teams that are already bowl eligible

 

 

1)  Kansas 10-0

2)  Missouri 9-1

3)  Oklahoma 9-1

4)  Texas 9-2

5)  Texas Tech 7-4

6)  Texas A&M 6-5 (only has 1 game left)

 

 

1)  Nebraska 5-6 (must beat Colorado)

2)  Colorado 5-6 (must beat Nebraska)

3)  Kansas State 5-5 (has 2 games left - vs. Missouri and @ Fresno State) (must win 1 to be bowl eligible)

4)  Oklahoma State 5-5 (has 2 games left - @ Baylor and @ Oklahoma) (must win 1 to be bowl eligible)

 

Teams not bowl eligible

 

1)  Iowa State 3-8

2)  Baylor 3-8

 

There are 6 teams that are currently bowl eligible and 4 other teams that are fighting for the last 2, possibly 3 bowl slots.  If we win, that will eliminate Colorado.  I can see K-State being bowl eligible by beating Fresno state and OSU being bowl eligible by beating Baylor.  If this happens, NU, K-State and OSU will make a total of 9 Big XII teams that are bowl eligible.  If the Big XII does not get an at-large BCS bid, then there will only be 8 bowl slots available and someone will be staying home. 

 

It comes down to this:  We need to beat Colorado.  And, since I don't see K-State beating Missouri, if they also lose to Fresno State, that will eliminate them, and then there will only be 8 Big XII teams eligible for the 8 guarenteed bowl slots.....and we'll be going bowling!!!!!!
